Product Overview
MAPP gas is a high-performance fuel gas, originally developed as a safer, more versatile alternative to acetylene. The name MAPP stands for MethylAcetylene-Propadiene-Propane, reflecting its original chemical composition . It is a stabilized mixture primarily consisting of methylacetylene (propyne), propadiene, and propane .
MAPP gas is colorless in both liquid and gas form, with a pronounced garlic-like or fishy odor at concentrations above 100 ppm . It is supplied as a liquefied compressed gas in disposable cylinders and is widely used in plumbing, HVACR, metalworking, and glassworking applications .
⚠️ Important Safety Note: MAPP gas is flammable and should be stored and handled with care. The gas is toxic if inhaled at high concentrations . NIOSH has set a recommended exposure limit (REL) of 1,000 ppm (1,800 mg/m³) over an 8-hour workday and 1,250 ppm for short-term exposure .

UN Number 1060 (stabilized methylacetylene-propadiene)
Molecular Formula C₃H₄ / C₃H₄ / C₃H₈ (varies by blend)
Molecular Weight 80.13 g/mol
Appearance Colorless liquefied gas
Odor Pronounced garlic-like or fishy odor
Flame Temperature (in Oxygen) approx. 2,925°C (5,300°F)
Flame Temperature (in Air) approx. 1,980–2,020°C (3,600–3,670°F)
Energy Content 21,000 BTU/lb (approx. 13.57 kWh/kg)
Safety Classification Flammable gas (stored as liquefied compressed gas)
Note: Genuine MAPP gas production in North America ceased in 2008. Many products currently labeled “MAPP” are substitutes containing predominantly propylene with some propane, and in some cases dimethyl ether . The specifications above represent typical characteristics of both genuine MAPP and high-quality substitutes.
📋 Quality & Performance
Parameter Value
Flame Temperature (Oxygen) approx. 2,925°C (5,300°F)
Flame Temperature (Air) approx. 1,980°C (3,600°F)
Power vs. Propane Up to 35% more powerful than propane
Burning Time (typical can) Up to 2.5 hours (longer than propane equivalent)
Low Temperature Operation Effective down to 0°C
Working Position Can be used in any position (360°)
Valve Connection Standard thread (typically 7/16″ EU or CGA600)
Applications
MAPP gas is widely used across multiple industries:
· HVAC & Plumbing – soldering and brazing copper pipes and fittings
· Metalworking – heating, cutting, and small-scale welding
· Welding – with oxygen for small steel parts; not recommended for large steel structures due to hydrogen embrittlement
· Underwater Cutting – preferred over acetylene due to safety at high pressures (acetylene can decompose explosively)
· Glassworking – lampworking and glass bead making
· Jewelry Making – precision soldering and brazing
· Culinary – browning and searing in sous-vide cooking
ℹ️ Note: MAPP gas is also available in small disposable cans (e.g., 650g, 850g, 12oz) for portable use . The gas composition in air provides sufficient heat output for most brazing and soldering tasks.
Documentation & Compliance
· COA (Certificate of Analysis) available with every shipment
· MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) provided upon request
· TÜV certified cylinders available
· UN 1060 classification for stabilized methylacetylene-propadiene
· Full shipping documents for smooth customs clearance
· Note: May require special shipping classification (2.1 flammable gas)
Storage & Handling
· Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from fire, sparks, and heat sources
· Keep cylinders upright and secured during storage and transport
· Do not refill or reuse disposable cylinders
· Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling
· Ensure work area is well-ventilated
· Do not expose to temperatures above 50°C
· Ground all equipment during transfer to prevent static discharge
· Dispose of empty cylinders in accordance with local environmental regulations
· Emergency response: In case of leakage, eliminate all ignition sources and ventilate the area immediately
· OSHA limit: 1,000 ppm over 8-hour workday; immediately dangerous to life and health at 3,400 ppm (10% of lower explosive limit)
